Tips on how to apply

1. Reach out for an informal chat with the hiring manager

  • Why? It’s always a good idea to reach out to the hiring manager for an informal chat about the job opportunity. This shows that you are proactive and interested and gives you a chance to learn more about the role and expectations regarding this.

  • How? Send a polite email or Teams message to the hiring manager expressing your interest and asking if they have time for a brief conversation. This will help you tailor your application and interview responses more effectively.

 2. Prepare for behavioural interviews using the STAR method

  • What is STAR? STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result. It’s a structured way of responding to behavioural interview questions by outlining the following:

    • Situation: Describe the context within which you performed a task or faced a challenge.

    • Task: Explain the actual task or challenge involved.

    • Action: Detail the specific actions you took to address the task or challenge.

    • Result: Share the outcomes or results of your actions.

  • Why? Using the STAR method helps you provide clear, concise, and compelling examples of your past experiences and achievements during the interview.

3. Provide evidence of your achievements

  • Why? Even though you work at NHS Resolution and people may know your work, hiring managers need to hear specific evidence of what you have achieved. This helps them understand the impact of your contributions and how you can add value in the new role.

  • How? Prepare a few key examples of your achievements that are relevant to the role you’re applying for. Use the STAR method to structure these examples and be ready to discuss them in detail during your interview.

4. Highlight your knowledge of the organisation

  • Why? As an internal candidate, you have the advantage of already knowing the organisation. Highlighting this knowledge can demonstrate your commitment and understanding of NHS Resolution’s goals and values.

  • How? Mention specific projects, initiatives, or values that resonate with you and explain how your experience aligns with them.

5. Take advantage of available resources

  • Interview skills course: We offer an interview skills course for internal candidates. To find out when the next session is and how to book on it, please contact a member of the OD team at nhsr.od@nhs.net

6. Stay positive and confident

  • Why? Confidence and a positive attitude can make a big difference in how you present yourself.

  • How? Believe in your abilities and the value you bring to the team. Practice your interview responses and remember to stay calm and composed.
